Panasonic TC-32LX60

The Panasonic TC-32LX60 is an attractive LCD HDTV. Its stylish black-and-silver frame and swiveling stand distinguish it from more generic designs, and its good combination of ports, image quality, and price (US$1200 as of 12/8/06) make it a good buy, overall.

Path to HDTV fraught with costly complications

I have been riding a high-definition roller coaster -- mesmerized by the new TV's crystal-clear images but disillusioned by the disappointingly low number of HD channels. BY HOWARD BRYANT Washington Post Service

Back in August, my needs were simple. As one of the reporters covering the Redskins for The Washington Post, I needed a television and a way to record games so I could analyze what turned out to be a five-win season. A $119 combination 13-inch TV with a VCR would have solved the problem.

Instead, I ended up taking the high-definition plunge, spending $1,399 for a far-bigger and fancier television set than I originally had in mind. As I left the store with my new HDTV, my confidence was boosted by approving nods from people in the parking lot.

''It's going to change your life,'' one man said.

Football fans view big screen TVs as the ideal party perk

CHICAGO — Mark Smithe admits to a moment of doubt before shelling out US$10,000 for a 65-inch high-definition, flat-panel, plasma TV and related gear last week.

The hesitation was brief. He’s a Bears fan, after all, and what better way to experience the Super Bowl than to see and hear every Brian Urlacher glare and crunching hit through a system with two million pixels and theatre-quality speakers?

"It’s a little bit of keeping up with the Joneses," said Smithe, one of an estimated 2.5 million Americans purchasing a new television for Super Bowl Sunday, based on results of a recent survey.

"Our friends’ jaws are going to drop when they see this."

Just buying chip and dip and a 12-pack of beer doesn’t cut it for Super Bowl parties anymore.

JVC Gets Ready to Launch 120Hz HDTV Sets

I talked a bit about a demo I saw at CES from Olevia that showed the difference in picture quality you get from a LCD TV with a 120Hz refresh rate compared to a set with the standard 60Hz rate. The visual difference was quite impressive with the 120Hz set looking much clearer and more life like.

JVC is poised to beat Olevia to market with sets based on the 120Hz tech and have announced three new TVs that will utilize the higher refresh rate allowing a new image on screen every 8.3ms, which is twice as fast as standard sets. The improved refresh rate is achieved via interpolation. The 32 LT-32L95, 37 LT-37LC95 and 42 LT42LC95 all share 120Hz refresh, 1366 x 768 resolution, 500 cd/m2 brightness and built in digital tuners. .
