| Big HDTV for the big game?
An estimated 2.5 million Americans plan to buy a new HDTV set to watch this Sunday's Super Bowl, according to the National Retail Federation. But which one should you get? TODAY Tech Editor Paul Hochman helps you make the right play by analyzing three different HDTVs representing the three major technologies: plasma, LCD (liquid crystal display) and DLP (digital light processor). All three of the sets highlighted below show the same image but have different attributes that make them attractive. First things first Before you pick your new TV, you need to look at the room it's going in. What room features are important? .
Samsung 40" LCD-TV LE40R71B, 16:9, 1366 x 768, PIP, HDMI, HD-ready ...
Not the cheapest of sets but then you get what you pay for. The image is sharp and rock steady with a brilliant colour range and contrast. With a number of preset picture modes, each one customisable, you can set this panel up to look how you want. You can actually make it too bright/sharp/colourful so that side of things is not an issue. A common argument against LCD is that the blacks are not as dark as Plasma. This is true but the LE40F is ''almost'' level with a Plasma in this respect and has the added advantage of being non-reflective. Response is excellent - fast screen action is crisp and smooth. Games via my XBOX 360 look stunning. I have this unit hooked up to the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player via HDMI and the picture quality is awesome. Even standard DVDs look amazing. Sound is adequate for watching normal TV but for DVDs and games I listen to it through a Cambridge Audio 640A stereo Amp.
