Plasma Frame Tv Plasma Buying Guide

Big HDTV for the big game?

An estimated 2.5 million Americans plan to buy a new HDTV set to watch this Sunday's Super Bowl, according to the National Retail Federation. But which one should you get?

TODAY Tech Editor Paul Hochman helps you make the right play by analyzing three different HDTVs representing the three major technologies: plasma, LCD (liquid crystal display) and DLP (digital light processor). All three of the sets highlighted below show the same image but have different attributes that make them attractive.

First things first

Before you pick your new TV, you need to look at the room it's going in. What room features are important?

Oppo LCD TV/DVD Combo

It looks great in a bedroom, on a kitchen counter, or even on a desktop. It would also look great in a small living room, dormitory or home office.

"It" is the Oppo LT-2007, a 20 inch LCD TV with a DVD player built in. This $599 U.S. item is from the same company that makes the tour de force up converting DVD player DVD-970HD I also reviewed recently. That player offered more bang for the buck than it really had any right to. Does the TV?

Well, no, but you can't expect bargains such as the DVD-970HD to come along every day. It's still a very good deal though -- and what it does offer you is a nice "conventional" LCD TV and DVD player combo that, as with the other DVD player, has so much flexibility it isn't funny.

It would also be equally at home as a PC monitor as it is as a television, making it an attractive choice for those with limited space but who require both a TV and a computer display.

Samsung Thermally-Enhanced Chip-on-Film (TECOF) for LCD TVs

There are many aspects companies work on to improve LCD TVs, not just the panel itself. Samsung announced now a new driver IC (DDI) for LCD TVs based on thermally-enhanced chip-on-film (TECOF) package that reduces thermal heat dissipation by 20% over a conventional COF package.

Bigger and Higher-resolution LCD TV panels put more demand on display driver circuits, thus generating more heat.
Samsung has developed a new material for the thin metal tape component that has apparently optimal properties for effectively maximizing heat dissipation.
