Buyers guide to HDTV gets you ready for some football

With the Super Bowl, new episodes of Entourage and The Sopranos, as well as March Madness coming up, now is as good a time as ever to buy that new HDTV that you've always wanted. But how do you decide on what TV to get? Here are the different types of HDTVs and their features:

Front Projectors: Front Projectors are for the elite, who have anywhere from $1,000 to upwards of $35,000 to spend on a TV.

Rear Projection: There are three types of Rear Projection TVs, with the most bought one being DLP. They are not as expensive as Front Projectors, but are still pricey coming in at any where from $1,000 to $5,000. One downside is that they are bigger and heavier then LCD TVs, and when viewed from the side, noticeable picture fade can be seen.

Plasma: Plasmas have a great price-to-performance ratio, going for $1,000 to $8,000.

Sony to contract Wistron to supply 37-inch LCD TVs

Sony Corp. of Japan recently chose Taiwan's Wistron Corp. as a contract supplier of 37-inch LCD TVs, which will adopt thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels made by AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), the island's No. 1 panel supplier.

Sony also assigned local TPV Technology Ltd. to supply some 40-inch TV models.

Sony used to focus on 32-, 40-, 46-, and 52-inch LCD TV models, leaving the 32-inch market to major rivals such as Samsung, Sharp, Philips, LG, etc. The company plans to launch first 37-inch model in the third quarter of this year to cash in on the long-neglected segment.

In the European market, Samsung of South Korea, Sony's major rival, has successfully pushed 37-inch LCD TV models, forcing Sony to review its product-mixture strategy.
